Quantum mechanics · the hydrogen atom

From one PDE to three ODEs

Two cuts, two constants (ℓ and m), and one condition on the radial equation (n): that is where all three quantum numbers come from.

■ r terms■ θ terms■ φ terms

Step 1 of 7

The equation

One equation, three variables tangled together: kinetic energy split into a radial part and an angular part, the proton's pull, and the total energy E we want to find.

Show the algebra
  1. Product rule: the radial Laplacian is the second derivative plus a 2/r term from the spreading of spherical shells.

  2. The potential depends on r alone. This is what makes separation possible.
