Global map of nations organized by geopolitical alliance and regional grouping

Nations are organized into formal alliances, trading blocs, and bilateral partnerships. This page maps the major alignments as of October 2026, sourced from official membership rosters and treaty texts. The visualization shows each alliance as a circular orbit of member states.

Definitions

Alliance
A formal or de facto grouping of nations united by treaty, shared security interests, or economic cooperation. NATO and CSTO are treaty-based; SCO and BRICS are institutionalized forums.
Geopolitical alignment
The strategic orientation of a nation based on its treaty memberships, military partnerships, trade blocs, and voting patterns in international organizations.
Non-aligned
Nations that do not formally join military alliances but may have bilateral defence partnerships, regional groupings (e.g., ASEAN), or flexible coalition memberships.
Mutual defence (Article 5)
NATO's collective-defence clause: an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all. Invoked once after 9/11 attacks on the USA.

Sources & Methodology

Member rosters sourced from official alliance websites (NATO.int, CSTO.int, SCO.int, BRICS.int), UN voting records, and bilateral defence agreements as of October 2026.

This map reflects formal institutional membership. Informal partnerships, strategic alignments, and ad-hoc coalitions are substantial but not shown here. Nations may participate in multiple groupings simultaneously (e.g., India in both SCO and BRICS).
